Book Review of the Abhorsen Series by Garth Nix
One of my favorite fantasy series is the Abhorsen series by Garth Nix. The books in the original trilogy are Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen. Another book has been published that I have not read, Clariel, and a fifth will be published at some point in 2016 titled Goldenhand.
This series is about the duties of the Abhorsen, a person who fights necromancers and sends the risen dead back into Death. The Abhorsen may walk in Death and uses similar powers to a necromancer. The world in this series is divided by the Wall. The Old Kingdom is filled with magic and sorcery while south of the Wall modern technology and society is used and many do not believe in magic. Sabriel grows up in a boarding school far south of the wall, taught theory about the work of the Abhorsen by her father, the current Abhorsen. When he dies suddenly, Sabriel finds herself thrown into the job without any practical experience, finding that knowing theory doesn't make up for it. She finds help and friends in strange places as she works to defeat an ancient evil.
This is a series that shows the strength of determination and a willingness to do whatever it takes. It shows the strength of curiosity and knowledge, and a willingness to trust and take a leap of faith. The protagonists are strong women and that is something I treasure in books, especially those written for young adults.
I have loved these books and read them many times since I was introduced to them eleven years ago. I'm looking forward to the new books and hope to read them soon.
