Book Review of the Tiger's Curse Series by Colleen Houck
Tiger's Curse is one of my very favorite series, sort of a guilty pleasure. I love the romance and adventure, and it's packed with both!
The novel is narrated by Kelsey, a recent high school graduate who gets a temporary job at a circus. The main attraction is a white tiger named Ren. Kelsey feels drawn to Ren and spends a lot of time in the barn where his cage is kept. She talks to him and reads him Shakespeare. She is strangely comfortable around this dangerous animal, and even reaches into his cage to pet him where she is met with affection from the strange white tiger.
Suddenly a stranger shows up on the circus grounds, a Mr. Kadam who has purchased Ren and will release him into a wildlife preserve in India. To Kelsey's shock, Mr. Kadam requests that she accompany Ren on his journey because she has such an affinity for the tiger. Kelsey accepts the offer for a free trip to India with the tiger she has grown to love, and to trust.
They arrive in India and Kelsey starts on a bumpy drive through India with Ren in a truck driven by a strange man with whom she can barely communicate. Then, in the middle of nowhere, while she is eating, the driver and his truck disappear leaving the strange white tiger alone with Kelsey.
She has no choice but to trust Ren to protect her as he leads her into the jungle, knowing that this white tiger is the only one she can trust.
This series is full of adventure and romance, with a heroine worthy of the companionship of a tiger. She is a fierce warrior as well as intelligent and kind. She is the equal of the heroes, not a meek girl waiting to be rescued. This damsel in distress kicks distress in the butt and fights along side the heroes, but she also feels like an everyday woman brought to extraordinary circumstances who rises to her full potential. She loves freely and gives complete loyalty to this tiger and Mr. Kadam as they lead her on an adventure filled with gods and a powerful curse.
I give this entire series an enthusiastic rating of:
