Cable Footies!
My the first pair of socks I made for myself is from a pattern in One Skein: 30 Projects to Knit and Crochet by Leigh Radford called "Cable Footies". They're lounge socks and very comfortable despite the slightly scratchy yarn I chose to make them in.
The pattern was easy to follow and it helped me understand the structure of socks and the process of making them with larger needles and worsted weight yarn before moving on to smaller needles and lighter weight yarn. The cables act as ribbing to help the socks fit well.
My mistake was not attempting to learn how to graft the toe and instead used a three-needle bind off which left a tab-like flap on the toe of my socks. I've since tried grafting and while I'm not good at it yet it looks better than the flap on these socks.
The yarn I used is Caron "One Pound" because it was what I had when I started to make the socks. It made them stiff and slightly scratchy, though it has improved after several washes.
I love these warm, comfortable socks and when my feet are cold these are the ones I reach for first.
