When the People You Look Up to Fail You
For the last four or five years, I've been enjoying content produced by the YouTuber the iilluminaughtii, who releases video essays several times a week with the help of a staff of researchers and editors. I found these videos to be intelligent and informative on interesting topics. She also has a Discord server with moderators, and at one point had a collaboration channel called Sad Milk with five other YouTubers, including two called The Click and One Topic at a Time, both of whom I watch pretty much every video they release.
Blair, aka the iilluminaughtii, has spent the last two or three weeks splattered all over the internet. Before all this started, she had well over a million subscribers on YouTube, headed toward two million. I didn't realize it, but she'd been embroiled in smaller scandals before. However, it seems this time all her former friends from Sad Milk, which was abandoned a couple of years ago, dog piled on her in what seems like a justified move that was a long time coming.
I have yet to dive a ton into the content covering the controversy other than two videos released from people involved and a couple of videos that simply shared the Tweets that show the whole thing unfolding.
How it started. Video runs 10:25.
"Apology video" from the iilluminaughtii. Video runs 42:48.
Response from the Click. Video runs 33:42.
The aftermath on Twitter from One Topic, Wonder, and Oz Media. Video runs 49:35.
Utter insanity.
The conclusion I'm forced to draw, along with many, many people, is that Blair is a crappy person. I'm determined not to rant because there is a reason I'm sharing this information.
That is because I've shared quite a number of videos from the iilluminaughtii on this blog over the last few years. Due to her behavior, I can no longer trust that she's providing unbiased and factual information. I will not attempt to sway anyone else from any support they may give her, but I have unsubscribed from her channel and will no longer be watching her content.
At this point, I have not decided whether I will remove my posts containing her videos or simply add a disclaimer. I'm leaning toward the former.
I apologize for sharing information from an untrustworthy source.
