Editing Craze
For the last week, I've been diving into the first edit on the novel I finished.
This edit requires printing out the novel and putting it in a binder, then tackling it with a pen and marking it up withproofreader 's marks to make edits. Correcting punctuation and grammar, editing word usage, rearranging sentences, adding phrases, and making notes in a notebook for bigger things that need to be fixed . It's time consuming and requires me to look at details in the flow of words and how the sentences are structured instead of getting caught up in the story. I love the story so that's hard.
Doing this is worth it because I see different things on the printed page than I do on the computer screen. I got the advice to do this from Stephen King's book On Writing. For my review of the book click here. It's considered one of the best books on the craft, so I took several pieces of Mr. King's advice to heart.
Once I have all my edits from my markups in my document, I'll run it through my new favorite editing software, ProWritingAid. It's incredible. After that, I hope it will be ready to post on Scribophile.
I desperately want to post it as I get chapters edited, but having two books going along with all my other projects would just be too much. I'm already overloaded. Well, for me anyway.
My gut tells me I've got something good here.Hopefully I'm right.
