Aftershock (Jax and Gia #2) by Sylvia Day

Aftershock is the second book in the Jax and Gia duo.

Jackson Rutledge was a master at playing games, both with his career as a fixer for his family and with nearly sidelining Gianna Rossi's career.

Jax thought Gia couldn't keep up and play his game. Little did he know she'd thrown out all the rules and begun her own game.

Aftershock is the second half of a novel divided into two novellas, beginning with Afterburn.

Despite my dislike of Afterburn, I decided to finish the tale and read Aftershock.

My love of Sylvia Day's writing transcends my dislike of these two novellas because they were excellently written. My problem was the story, not the writing.

Gia has decided to play Jax's game on her own terms and doesn't trust him. Yet she agrees to move in with him. Jax has no confidence in her ability to handle the shark den that is his family, yet he throws her in by having her move in with him.

This made no sense to me. None at all. Neither trusted the other despite declarations of love. Being with Jax nearly costs Gia her career, yet she remains loyal to a man she doesn't trust. The whole thing baffled me.

Maybe it's because I've never had a relationship where I didn't trust the other person. Maybe it's because I've never been hurt that badly. Maybe it's because I'm too nice of a person to understand these tactics. Whatever the reason, I couldn't fathom why the characters would act the way they do.

That lead to a disconnect between me and the characters, leaving me with a strong dislike of them and the story.

As I said, the writing was excellent, giving the book a higher rating than it would recieve otherwise.
