Review of Tempt Me With Diamonds (London Jewels #1) by Jane Feather
Tempt Me With Diamonds is the first book in the London Jewels Trilogy.
Set in Edwardian England.
After a battle in South Africa killed her brother and illness took her father, Diana Sommerville is left the only heir of a considerable fortune in diamond mines. Upon her return to London, she finds her ex-fiance and brother's best friend already in residence in her own house.
Rupert Lacey was willed Jem Sommerville's half of the estate before he was killed in battle. Now, all the land, diamonds, homes, and a racehorse are half his.
Diana has no intention of making Rupert's path easy, and arguments sprout at every turn while they attempt to settle in. On top of that, it would be a scandal for them to live together unmarried, so they decide to let others assume they married in South Africa as was planned.
Rupert wants to lay everything to rest and have Diana back again, but she's having none of it.
This book was forgettable. I hadn't read historical romance in a long time, so I thought I'd try it. I read it quickly but there were many frustrating things about it.
Diana was a stubborn, bratty, rich girl acting half her age. She was so determined to punish Rupert that she made a fool of herself and him. Rupert was a stubborn, controlling man whose sole occupation was subduing Diana and showing her who's boss. He refused to answer important questions, taking those questions as disloyalty instead of what they actually were: requests for more information.
I didn't like either of them and wasn't really rooting for them. There was no real climax, no point where I thought "Oh no, will they make it?" because both their actions screamed that they could never make it and be happy.
Descriptions were okay, settings were ill defined, characters were bland or unlikable, and the POV switches were rapid and hard to follow. It wasn't an easy or entertaining read, and it didn't leave me with a good impression of the author.
Not recommended, and I won't be continuing with more of the series.
