Review of Under the Christmas Tree (Virgin River #7.5) by Robyn Carr
Under the Christmas Tree is book 7.5 in the series Virgin River.
Virgin River is a magical place at Christmastime. Every year, they put up a giant lighted tree in the center of town decorated to be a tribute to the military.
When Annie McCarty discovers a box of newborn puppies under the tree, they call Nathaniel Jenson, the local vet, for help. The two team up for the care of the puppies rather than sending them to a shelter.
As the puppies get bigger, their attraction grows. Does Nathaniel have what it takes to break down Annie's walls?
This was a cute story. It's a novella, only six chapters, and was an easy and adorable read.
I liked Annie. She'd been terribly hurt not long before and had understandable trust issues that Nathaniel had to push past. And then Nathaniel's past gave her a healthy dose of insecurity. Her character wasn't deep, but this was only six chapters, so there isn't room to go very deep. She was relatable and likable.
Nathaniel was likable and seemed like a great catch. There was one point where he was pressuring Annie for sex that I didn't like, but she stood her ground and he gave in. That didn't make me very happy with him, but for the rest of the story, he was fantastic. There wasn't as much depth to his character as with Annie, and I wished I had a little more on him than I did.
I wished I could hold the puppies with everyone else; they sounded adorable.
The writing was good, as always for Robyn Carr. Some of the dialog was cheesy, which stuck out a little more than it usually does. I always find her descriptions lacking, though they're consistent in quality and depth. They're just not to my taste. The one negative is this writing felt more rushed than the other novels. Perhaps because it's a novella when she usually writes novels.
All-in-all, I enjoyed this story. I can't wait for the next book!
