Review of Hidden Away (KGI #3) by Maya Banks

Hidden Away is the third book in the series KGI.

Garret Kelly wants revenge for fallen men under his watch, and the person responsible is Marcus Lattimer. When he's offered the gig of spending time on the beach to keep an eye on Sarah Daniels, he only takes it because Sarah is the way to Marcus.

Sarah is in hiding after witnessing Marcus kill a man—only Marcus did it for her, his half-sister. Sarah has darkness in her past, and it draws Garrett in. He didn't expect to fall for her, but soon he's not sure what's more important—protecting Sarah or taking down Marcus.

Garrett isn't sure what or who Sarah is running from when she flees her beach hideaway, but he's determined to complete his mission, no matter what that means.

Trigger warning: depiction of a rape victim.

I loved this book. Garrett is a likable hero even if he's deceiving Sarah. She's vulnerable, innocent, and needy, but surprisingly resourceful. I liked her more than I expected. Her trust of Garrett was touching, and I felt his draw to her was genuine almost from the start.

I hated that Garrett kept up with his deception even after proving to Sarah that he could take care of her and keep her safe. However, it was understandable and kept in line with his character as shown in this book and the first two. Despite the deception, I rooted for Garrett to complete his mission.

Sarah is a wonderful character who persevered in defying her attackers and evading the people after her. I liked that she trusted Garrett so he could keep her safe even as I wished she understood what her brother was really like so she could understand why Garrett would want to take him down.

Marcus made for a compelling antagonist, and there were several antagonists. He was very much a gray character, without morals in some ways and holding strong morals in others. His devotion to Sarah was touching, and in that way I liked him, but knowing what he was responsible for in his empire made me want Garrett to take him down. I thought Marcus was a well-written character who embodied the gray area between good and bad.

The tale was exciting, suspenseful, romantic, and uplifting. I really enjoyed the way things wrapped up at the end.

The settings in the book were varied, from beach to jungle. They were vividly described in a way I love to experience as a reader.

I can't wait for more!
