Review of No Place to Run (KGI #2) by Maya Banks
No Place to Run is the second book in the series KGI.
Sam Kelly spent weeks in a passionate affair while undercover in Mexico. After the job was over, he returned for her only to find she'd vanished. Now, months later, he's shocked to pull Sophie out of the lake behind his home.
Sophie has been on the run from assassins for months, doing everything she can to protect herself and her unborn baby. But she knows time is running out. She runs to Sam, hoping he'll protect her and her child—his child. But she brings a warning: her presence will bring danger to his doorstep, and they have to run.
Sam is determined not to be seduced again, but Sophie's lure is undeniable. The fact that she carries his child ups the stakes. He has to keep them out of danger, But when he learns who Sophie really is, it brings a whole new level of danger.
This book was much better than The Darkest Hour. As much as I liked the first one, this was better—higher stakes, more action, and a kick-ass heroine who in many ways was braver than the head of KGI. I absolutely loved it.
Sam Kelly heads up KGI as the oldest Kelly brother, and he runs the facility that serves as their headquarters, located mere yards from his home on Lake Kentucky. His passion for Sophie at the beginning made for a steamy opener, and his frustration at losing her made him more sympathetic. I liked his bravery and determination to protect his family—including his child. I could empathize and sympathize with him as he worked to run the operations to save Sophie from the men hunting her.
I adored Sophie almost from the start. When it became clear what her reality was as compared to what Sam thought while they were in the middle of their affair in Mexico, I was in awe of her. Sophie is made of steel and in many ways tougher and more resourceful than Sam. She was incredible, and I rooted for her from beginning to end.
Learning more about the KGI compound, their war room, and the house Sam lives in was great. Maya Banks always makes her settings beautiful in their descriptions, and I wanted to spend time sitting on the dock with my feet in the water—just as long as they didn't have to fish me out like they did Sophie.
