Review of Backward Glance by Robyn Carr

Backward Glance is a novella included in my copy of 'Tis the Season.

Leigh Brackon is home to help her ailing mother, though she grows suspicious when she finds her old flame John McElroy entrenched in a large landscaping project at her mother's house.

Leigh and John's relationship ended badly five years ago, and both of them have been burned by bad marriages. They're hesitant to start again, but they find themselves just as drawn to each other as they once were. Only now Leigh has twin sons and a secret.

With some good-hearted meddling from Leigh's mother and her friends, Leigh and John might be able to find the way forward together.

This was a sweet story with realistically frustrating, flawed, and quirky characters.

Leigh's mother made me laugh as she worked so hard to push Leigh and John together. Leigh's absentmindedness and distractible nature was alternately ridiculous and relatable. John's insecurity about being a handyman to Leigh's advanced science degrees was understandable even while I wanted to urge him to be more confident.

I figured out Leigh's secret early and eagerly waited for its reveal. Her boys were cute and playful, and I adored all their scenes, especially when John started bonding with them.

Overall, the story was cute and sweet, like a scoop of ice cream on a summer day. Maybe two scoops.
