Review of The Affair (Anetakis Tycoons #3) by Maya Banks
The Affair (originally published as The Tycoon's Secret Affair) is the third book in The Anetakis Tycoons Trilogy.
After a night of passion with a stranger, Jewel Henley discovers she's slept with her new boss, Piers Anetakis. Almost immediately, she finds herself without a job... and pregnant.
Five months later, with no other options, she contacts Piers, surprised to discover he's been looking for her. His shock is understandable when Jewel informs him of his impending fatherhood. His Greek honor insists they marry as soon as possible to provide for the child.
They have lust between them and lie on the cusp of something more, but will it be enough to build a life together?
This one was my favorite of the trilogy. Both characters were damaged in the past, haunted by their hurts, and it affected their relationship in a realistic way. Piers's lashing out at Jewel was reprehensible, but after knowing his hurts toward the end of the book, it makes more sense. Jewel's suffering as he lashes out was heartbreaking, and when all was known about her past, it made Piers's actions even more painful for me.
I liked both Piers and Jewel despite Piers's lashing out, and I enjoyed reading both their perspectives. Jewel was a strong woman brought to her knees by her need to take care of her baby, and Piers was a man used to ruling his domain now challenged by a willful woman. It was a delight to see on both sides.
As in the rest of the series, descriptions of the settings and people weren't very good, though I felt this book was the best of the three. Action was well mapped out like always with Maya Banks. If I couldn't picture where I was, at least I always knew what was happening.
Dialog was often cheesy, but it worked for me so I didn't mind. Other than that, it was smooth and easy to read.
Overall, it was an okay book that I enjoyed more than I expected.
