Book Review of Kushiel's Dart (Kushiel's Universe #1) by Jaqueline Carey

Kushiel's Dart is about a woman named Phédre, an indentured to the pleasure houses and destined to be a servant of Naamah, the goddess of those who sell themselves for the pleasure of others in the name of their goddess.

However, Phédre has a red mote in her eye, a dart that marks her as a scion of Kushiel, a god of pain, which curses her to have pleasure ad pain as one. Her intelligence and this quality catches the eye of a man who buys her from the pleasure houses and teaches her to be a spy as well as learning the arts of a servant of Naamah. A spy in the bedchambers of the rich and powerful.

Phédre uncovers a secret that threatens her country and everything she holds dear. She embarks on an unexpected adventure that changes her from a spy/prostitute to slave, and finally a powerful woman who can unite countries and protect not only her country, but herself and those that she loves.

It is a story on an epic scale with and incredible villainess, and the first in a trilogy surrounding Phédre as well as the first in a series of nine books comprised of three trilogies.

I very much enjoyed this book. Phédre was definitely a force to be reckoned with--intelligent, cunning, passionate, and extraordinarily loving. I admired her for her strength and loyalty in the face of so many dangers and the kind of misfortunes that would break many people.

However, this book contains a lot of sex, detailed enough to leave little to the imagination. A lot of it is due to her occupation, and much of it involved whips and chains and other instruments of inflicting pain.

In spite of that, I found the book to be wonderful and am looking forward to the sequel, Kushiel's Chosen. I give the book:
