Book and Movie Review of If I Stay by Gayle Forman
Seventeen-year-old Mia is facing what she believes is the most important decision of her life: where to go to college. Will she go to Julliard, leaving behind her family and losing her boyfriend? Or will she stay nearby and give up her music?
Then, on a February morning, she goes for a drive with her family. Everything changes in the blink of an eye and she's suddenly faced with the only decision that ever really mattered. Will she stay or go?
Friends and family try to convince her to stay in a heartbreaking and beautiful portrayal of one girl faced with a decision no one ever wants to make.
This book was beautiful and painful, heartbreaking and poignant, and above all, shows the true value of love, whether it's from friends, family, or a significant other.
Mia's choice, dancing along life and death, had me in tears for most of the book. The flashback blended into the present so well and flowed seamlessly from one scene to the next.
It's a short book, but itdoesn't need to be long to say what it needs to say.
A movie adaptation was released in 2014 starring Chloe Grace Moretz.
The movie was as beautiful as the book. It kept the flow back and forth between the hospital and flashbacks and showed all the people who love Mia coming to convince her to stay.
I cried through most of the movie, just like I did with the book. It's a tearjerker, and I loved it.
