Review of Rush (Breathless #1) by Maya Banks

Rush is the first book in the Breathless trilogy.

Gabe Hamilton owns a chain of hotels with his best friends Jace Crestwell and Ash McIntyre. Gabe has wanted Jace's younger sister Mia for years, ever since she was in college. But he bided his time, worried about his relationship with Jace and the fourteen-year age difference.

But now Mia is twenty-four, and Gabe decides it's time to make his move.

He has a very specific type of relationship in mind, and Mia, having obsessed about Gabe for nearly a decade, decides to try it provided they keep it a secret from Jace. It turns into a consuming, passionate affair for both of them.

Warning: this book contains a Dominant/submissive relationship that may upset some readers.

I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. Gabe's attitude in his dominance was powerful, but his tender thoughts and love for Mia were even more powerful. Mia's quiet submissiveness was countered with an opinionated, loyal personality. I enjoyed reading both perspectives equally.

The Chekov's Gun introduced from the very beginning was bound to go off at some point or another. It had to, and I knew from the beginning what the climax would be. It was just a matter of when and how it would happen. That is the nature of a Chekov's Gun. The event was sudden and surprising, and it happened in a way I didn't expect which is how a Chekov's Gun should go off. Everyone's reaction to the event made sense with their characters and made me want to thump their heads to make them see reason. The ending was satisfying, and it honestly brought tears to my eyes.

The things Maya Banks are best at are alpha men and happily ever afters.

This was a surprisingly good read.
