Review of The New Crochet Stitch Dictionary by Braas and Hetty-Burkart

The New Crochet Stitch Dictionary by Nele Braas and Eveline Hetty-Burkart is a new release of 2021 that I found at my library.

It features 440 stitch patterns and is divided into chapters by stitch type. The chapters are basic stitches; shell and fan; clusters, popcorns, bobbles, puffs, and nupps; spike stitches; raised stitches; mesh and trellis; crossed and interlocking stitches, cables; ripple and chevron; edgings and borders; and granny squares.

The patterns are given in charts with notes and instructions about the number of stitches to chain to start and what rows to repeat for the pattern.

The book is bright and colorful, and the organization makes it easy to find what you're looking for by pattern type and also by pattern name in the index. Some patterns listed are meant to be used in the round, but most are for flat projects, though the stitch patterns could be adapted to work in the round.

It's the best crochet stitch dictionary I've seen.

The single knock I would give it is that the instructions are only in charts, not written out. Not everyone can read a chart—I'm good with them in knitting but struggle in crochet—and that will limit the number of crocheters who can use this book.

Regardless of my struggles with charts, I'll work to get better so I can use this book! My birthday is coming up, and I know what I'm asking for!
