Review of Safe at Last (Slow Burn #3) by Maya Banks

Safe at Last is the third book in the Slow Burn series.

Zach Covington fell in love with a girl from the wrong side of the tracks—Anna-Grace. He was the town's golden boy, and no one thought she was good enough. Zach didn't care, and they were determined to make it work. Until one day Gracie disappeared without a trace.

Years later, Zach is now working for Devereaux Security. He sees a perfectly rendered painting of a place only Gracie would know. He searches for the artist only to find a wounded shell of a woman who lost her psychic powers and believes he betrayed her.

An enemy discovers Zach's weakness, and now he must save Gracie from danger. He hopes that saving her will help convince her he didn't betray her all those years ago and that he still loves her.

I enjoyed this book despite it touching on subjects I don't like to read about. This entire series had me gobbling up the books as fast as I could. Maya Banks is now one of my favorite authors.

The suspense in this book, the threat from an old enemy, was fantastic. The tension built slowly, then exploded into imminent danger for the couple. It had me glued to my e-reader. I flew through the pages.

The characters, Gracie and Zach, I felt were well-developed. I found Zach to be worthy of Gracie, and I rooted for Gracie to see Zach's innocence and love. When what happened when Gracie disappeared was revealed, my heart broke for her—and for Zach when he found those responsible.

The dialog was good, as always for Maya Banks, and I enjoyed the descriptions. They were enough to allow me to populate what existed around the characters without turning into exposition.

Overall a fun, intense read that I enjoyed.
