Review of Unwound (Mastered #2) by Lorelei James

Unwound is the second book in the Mastered series.

Ronin Black fell hard for Amery Hardwick, but his demands for her to be open with him coupled with his holding back pieces of himself from her has driven her away.

Without her, his life has fallen apart. As he explores feelings he's never had before, he works to win back Amery any way he can.

When pieces of their relationship, the darker side to Ronin and secret desires of Amery's, come to light, their relationship will be tested to its limits.

I couldn't wait long to see what happened next for Ronin and Amery after the excellent cliffhanger for the first book. Ronin's reaction to losing Amery was shocking and the result of that was harrowing.

To my delight, this book is a dual perspective from both Amery and Ronin. The exploration of Ronin's thoughts and feelings brought a whole new layer to the story, and I loved every sentence of this addition. It was a fantastic exploration of the couple's dynamic and desires. This gave an aspect to Ronin that was completely in line with his portrayal in Bound. It made the book so much better for me.

Descriptions were excellent, a strong point for Ms. James's writing, and I could picture the dojo and Amery's office and apartment. I loved that I knew exactly where they were without ever having been to Denver.

The plot was in my opinion better than Bound. The exploration of characters introduced in the first book gave this one more layers. There were surprising developments and lovely twists. The climax, however, was a little disappointing. Ms. James could have played it up much more than she did, but it was a little anti-climactic and was too easily and neatly tied up. Especially since there are two more books. All the same, I really enjoyed it.
