Book Review of The Annotated Sense & Sensibility by Jane Austen ed. David M. Shapard
Anyone who knows me well can tell you I'm crazy about Jane Austen. I've read all her completed novels at least once, seen multiple film adaptations of each completed novel, and own at least one of each novel. I watch them over and over again. I even have the feature film made about Jane Austen's love life and a retelling of Pride & Prejudice that is an enormously funny and romantic addition to my film library.
When I found out that David M. Shapard was releasing annotated versions of Jane Austen's novel, I was very excited. His release of Pride & Prejudice was met with a lot of success and it oddly took me several years to buy any of his works. I purchased The Annotated Sense & Sensibility in the summer of 2016 and read it soon after.
Mr. Shapard's editing includes information on cultural references, social norms, courtesy, politics, dress, social expectations of men and women, and illustrations. I have been enamored with Jane Austen's world for many, many years and with this book I've had the opportunity to know it better and the novel has more meaning to me now. It is my favorite of her six completed works and I appreciate it more now than I did when I first read it nearly twenty years ago. At this time I do not believe Mr. Shapard has released annotated versions of all six novels, but I'm looking forward to collecting them all as they are released.
This version of Jane Austen's first published novel is a must-have for any Austen enthusiast.
