Review of With Every Breath (Slow Burn #4) by Maya Banks

With Every Breath is the fourth book in the Slow Burn series.

Eliza Cummings is a badass woman who works for Deveraux Security. But even those close to her don't know her darkest secrets. Long ago, she was terrorized by a killer and helped put him away for good. But now he's being set free and Eliza must make sure he doesn't kill again.

Wade Sterling doesn't pretend to be a good man. He does things his way without regard to a moral compass. He once took a bullet for Eliza, and now she's under his skin. He can't rid himself of her, so he embraces it.

When Eliza adopts a frightened, haunted look, Wade knows something is terribly wrong. She runs in order to save those closest to her from the killer she's determined to stop. Wade follows because he considers Eliza his, and whatever she's fighting, he'll protect her from to his last breath.

This vulnerable side of Eliza made her feel even more of a badass than she did in previous books. All the members of Deveraux Security have to take a lot on faith when confronted with psychic gifts, and I often wondered why so many of them accepted the existence of psychic abilities without question.

Zach's acceptance made more sense in the last book, and this one shows why Eliza never questions the three women's abilities.

The events of this book enhance Eliza's dedication and loyalty to not only Deveraux Security but also the protection of innocent lives. Eliza was more of a background character before now, and after reading this book, I wish we could have known her better before this.

Wade, introduced in the last book, was an enigma then. Getting to know him more now almost made him more of an enigma. I kept wondering what made him this way and what brought him to the point that he'd made the choices he did. He's an antihero, and it was a definite change of pace from Maya Banks's usual male leads. He's a man for which the ends justify the means, and it makes me both admire him and bring up my suspicion.

The plot was strong, and as I read more about the villain for this book, I thought better and better of Eliza.

A strong edition to the series.
