Review of Living Dead In Dallas (Sookie Stackhouse #2) by Charlaine Harris
Living Dead In Dallas is the second book in the Sookie Stackhouse series.
Sookie is having a bad streak. First, one of her co-workers is killed, then a mysterious creature ravages and poisons her. Vampires save her life, the very ones Bill knows and she's not sure she trusts.
To honor a promise, Sookie and Bill go to Dallas for Sookie to read minds in a case of a missing vampire. This leads them down a dark road to a group intent on destroying vampires once and for all.
I liked this book, but not overly.
It's becoming clear to me that Sookie and Bill, while they care for each other, are not the greatest match. And Sookie's tendency to act before she thinks makes her not as appealing to me as a heroine because I can't relate—I have anxiety so I think and think and think, then I act, and then I worry about the action for years. I have no concept of the consistent way she acts before she thinks, especially when it comes to the guy she loves.
However, the storyline and action were strong. I liked the way it was written and the way the story built in intensity through some very explosive twists and events. It was high stakes and lots of action.
Unfortunately, I examined the wrong review of the first Sookie Stackhouse book where the reviewer gave away an enormous plot twist occurring in a later novel but insisted it was fine since they didn't reveal the ending. Not cool. My first thought upon reading this reveal was "Well then, why am I reading this?" Because of that combined with my thoughts on Sookie and her relationship, I'm not sure I'm going to continue the series. Even without the spoiler, I don't know how much farther I would have gotten after reading the blurb for the next book, Club Dead.
While I love paranormal romance and vampires, I'm not so sure I'm really into Sookie Stackhouse.
