Review of After the Storm (KGI #8) by Maya Banks
After the Storm is the eighth book in the series KGI.
Donovan Kelly is the steadfast brains of the operation—the tech nerd and operator of KGI's main computer of his design. He has a strong sense of justice and a weakness for women and children. His brothers think it's a miracle he's been single as long as he has.
Then a young family in need blows into town—a woman and her two younger siblings in trouble and in need. Van's instincts to protect and defend come roaring to the surface. But Eve is poised to run at the first sign of danger, and if Van isn't careful, she'll run before he can help.
Eve's dark past closes in, and she has no choice but to accept help for the sake of the siblings she'd give her life for.
The thought of reading a book about Donovan thrilled me, as did the blurb. And the first quarter of the book was awesome. Then it turned into something totally insane. It was the biggest example of insta-love I've ever seen—and not in a good way—and Eve and her siblings didn't behave realistically for what they'd been through. Though early on, the younger sister responded realistically to men. Later on, no. All of them trusted too quickly, and Eve jumping into bed with Donovan was very odd.
I'd always loved Van, so this was horribly disappointing. I also loved Eve as a character and the way she loved and protected her siblings, so the way she behaved with Donovan baffled me. And don't even get me started on her decisions in the climax. It made zero sense given her decisions early in the novel.
This whole novel was a mass of confusing plot and character decisions on Maya Banks's part. I really don't understand why she wrote this book the way she did. It had so much potential. So, so much. But for me, this book was a flop.
