Review of Adulting 101 by Lisa Henry
Adulting 101 was a hilarious foray into a young man's first relationship.
Nick is eighteen and in the middle of an existential crisis. A distraction from that is his infatuation with Jai, a twenty-five-year-old who works construction during the summer so he can travel the rest of the year.
After an ill-conceived sexual encounter at work gets them both fired, Nick proposes a friends-with-benefits arrangement for the next ten weeks until Nick leaves for college and Jai is off for Argentina.
What begins as friendship becomes something neither expected.
It gives a good telling of the trope of the nerd and the cool kid. Nick is socially awkward in an endearing way, interpreted in his own head hilariously. I laughed through half the novel. Jai's interactions with his family were colorful and made me smile.
The two guys' internal struggles drew me in, but it was Nick's inner voice that really made the book come to life for me. Comedy is hard to write, but Lisa Henry accomplished it seamlessly.
