Book Review of Hold On (The 'Burg #6) by Kristen Ashley

Hold On is book six in the series The 'Burg.

Cher Rivers changed her name and started a new life after having her old one ravaged by a serial killer. Now she bar tends and works hard to raise her son right. She knows she's not the kind of girl who gets what she dreams.

For years, she's been in love with Garrett "Merry" Merrick, and she's satisfied herself with making him laugh, being one of the guys, because she knows she'll never be the woman who has him in the end.

The Merricks love with all they have, so when Garrett's mother was murdered, his ability to love was damaged. His one true love he pushed away, just like his sister. They were now divorced, but everyone knows they belong together, including Garrett.

Then Cher takes Merry's back one night, and for him, everything changes. With his eyes finally open, he sees Cher as though for the first time.

When I saw this book was about Cher, the woman Denny duped—Denny, the axe-wielding serial killer from book one—getting her happily ever after, I nearly jumped for joy.

At the point this book takes place, Cher has been working at Feb's bar for years in her new life away from all the crap she dealt with before. It's so satisfying to see that she's an awesome mom with a great kid. However, it hurt so much to see she had such a low opinion of herself that she thought Merry could never love her. That she wasn't good enough for him. Because it's a load of crap.

When Merry thought of her much as she thought of herself, it pissed me off, but then he started to see his ex for who she was and Cher for the truth behind the facade she built to keep people away. It made me so happy when he finally broke through that. When they developed their system of telling each other when they're having their internal struggles and lashing out but it's not the other's fault, I applauded. They were, to me, one of the strongest couples in the series.

I love them so much.

When addressing the setting, I can't go without addressing Cher's house. It was beautifully described with minimal words but conveys the personality of Cher's decor. I wanted to go sit in her house! And I wanted desperately to see how she would decorate her Christmas tree.

With this book, Kristen Ashley's series The 'Burg ends. My favorite book is Golden Hour, but I think this one pulls in second because of Cher herself.
