Book Review (Updated) of The Elite (The Selection #2) by Kiera Cass

The Elite is the second book in the series The Selection.

With the group of thirty-five girls now down to the Elite six, the competition has become even more fierce.

America remains undecided about her choice between Prince Maxon and her first love, Aspen, who is now a guard in the palace. But with the other five girls decided, she doesn't have much more time to decide—commit to Maxon before it's too late or leave and marry a now financially stable soldier who has climbed several castes.

Aspen is her past, but who will be her future?

I read the Selection series back in 2018 and posted a review. This review of the series is based on a reread with a different perspective on books and book reviews.

This book intensified the series, especially as the reader gets closer to finishing the novel. The first book was gripping in a junk food way, but this one is a little more thought-provoking as those at the palace dealt more with the rebels and deciphering who they are and what they wanted.

I still like the character of America Singer. She is intelligent and comes up with wonderful ideas. Her ideas later in the novel drew me into her character more, even as she was making stupid decisions that, if discovered, could ruin her life.

Maxon became a more layered character, and while his partiality for America became clear, it was also apparent that "dating" six girls at once was not a figure of speech. However, I still admired him because of how he reacted when America uncovered this reality. His trust in America and the way he confided in her about many things made me root for their relationship more than America's connection with Aspen.

Aspen I was not sold on. I felt he was almost forcing things on America that could have ruined both their lives. It was incredibly frustrating.

Overall, I enjoyed this book, and I hope to read more Kiera Cass in the future—after my reviews of the books in the Selection series are complete.
