Review of Colters' Promise (Colters' Legacy #4) by Maya Banks
Colters' Promise is the fourth book in the series Colters' Legacy.
Holly Colter can't cook. Her three husbands have been in charge of the kitchen for over thirty years. But this Christmas, Holly wants to make their feast. She enlists her daughter-in-law Lily to teach her the recipes and techniques she needs to feed her family for the holiday.
Lily has discovered, to her dismay, that she is pregnant. After losing her daughter to SIDS several years earlier in a previous marriage, she is terrified to lose another.
Max's sister calls him for help as she escapes an abusive relationship, and Max goes to her rescue. Callie insists on flying to New York to bring her to Clyde, to the mountain where they live.
As the Colters pass the time approaching Christmas, surprising turns in health and wellness interrupt the happiness they've created.
This book essentially ties up threads leftover from the first three books and introduces a new character. It's shorter than the other books, closer to a novella, but I enjoyed it.
The plot was a little convoluted because of three distinct storylines for three narrating characters. I did like the entrance of Max's sister Lauren and admired her strength as well as identifying with her reaction to arriving in Clyde and admission into the Colter family. Through the convoluted plot, the individual storylines were fairly simple. None of them delved deep, though that's likely both due to and the source of the length of the book.
I'm not sure this book was strictly necessary. Lily's pregnancy and Lauren's arrival were important for the fifth book, but I think these storylines could have been introduced differently and eliminated the need for this book. However, it's always up to the author's creative license to tell the stories how they wish.
An okay addition to a series I love.
