Review of Keep Me Safe (Slow Burn #1) by Maya Banks

Keep Me Safe is the first book in the Slow Burn series.

Caleb Devereaux's sister has been kidnapped. He turns to an unlikely source—a woman with the psychic ability to experience the victim's pain and location. Each time Ramie locates a victim, she loses a piece of herself. Helping Caleb nearly destroys her.

As he leaves, Caleb promises to always help her. After rescuing his sister, he searches for Ramie, but she's vanished. Despite all his efforts, he cannot find her.

Ramie is being hunted, and she has nowhere to turn. Many months after helping Caleb, she turns to him as a last resort. His security company founded after his sister's kidnapping takes her case and works to protect her and find her tormentor.

Caleb and Ramie find themselves risking their hearts as her predator closes in.

This book was significantly darker than the Colters' Legacy series, and the thriller aspect of it had me captivated. I read the book in two days, my heart pounding as the climax approached.

The characters in this book were more complex than those in the previous series I read, and while I don't normally read thrillers, the intensity and pull of Ramie's situation and Caleb's involvement made the book a page-turner. I couldn't get enough!

I found the plot and characters believable, and the world building was nearly flawless. Despite the subject matter being darker than I usually like and edging along subjects I don't like reading about, I enjoyed this book enough to pick up the next book in the series.
