Review of Halfway to the Grave (Night Huntress Universe #1) by Jeaniene Frost

Halfway to the Grave is the first book in the paranormal romance series Night Huntress and the first book in the larger series Night Huntress Universe.

Catherine "Cat" Crawfield is the result of her mother's date rape at the hands of a vampire.
After learning of her legacy, she dedicates her life to killing vampires—all evil, vile creatures.

One night, she attempts to kill a vampire who turns it around on her. Impressed by her abilities and shocked by her visible traits that mark her vampire heritage, he offers to help her find her father if she'll work with him. Bones trains Cat to be even more lethal than before and partners with her to strengthen his ability to be a successful bounty hunter.

He confuses Cat by repeatedly showing of positive qualities when she'd been taught that all vampires were evil monsters. Could some of them be good?

As they become more deadly, they are pursued by the kind of monsters Cat learned about.

It took a few chapters for me to really get into this book, my first dive into adult paranormal romance outside of my work critiquing on writing websites. Once the book picked up, I was hooked. It took me over a week to get a third of the way in, and I read the rest in two days.

Cat and Bones are a seemingly unstoppable team, and his help makes Cat into a lethal vampire-killing warrior. She's kick-ass in a different way than the stars of young adult paranormal romance are. Less angst, more battle and romance. Bones is cunning and ruthless, but Jeaniene Frost makes it sexy.

I cheered when Bones finally made his feelings known, and even more when Cat accepted hers.

The final battle had me glued to the screen of my e-reader, and the climax had me nearly in tears.

For anyone who loves vampire stories or paranormal romance, I would recommend this book. It was far better than I ever expected. A wonderful piece of it is this book is the first in a series of seven and one of four series that take place in the Night Huntress universe for a total of sixteen books with overlapping characters.

I can't wait for more of Cat and Bones!
