Review of City of Bones (Mortal Instruments #1) by Cassandra Clare
City of Bones is the first book in the series The Mortal Instruments.
The book is about Clary, who finds herself thrust into a world of demon fighters after witnessing a few teenagers kill what looked to be a teenage boy in the back room of a dance club. Then the boy vanished. The teenagers are Jace, Isabella, and Alec who don't seem to be visible to anyone else.
After their appearance in her life, everything falls apart.
Clary's mother is kidnapped that very same night and when Clary goes home to investigate her mother's mysterious phone call, she's attacked by a monster. One that can't possibly be real.
She seeks shelter with the teenagers from the club, demon fighters known as Shadowhunters. As she gets to know the world of the Shadowhunters and how she fits into the picture, Clary's life takes on a whole new meaning.
I found the book to be engaging and the premise was definitely very creative. It was well-written, but the final plot twist was a little too far-fetched for me, though it made sense in context. The effects it will have on the parties tangled up by the plot twist have yet to be seen. I'll be interested to see how it plays out.
I liked it, but I don't think it lives up to the hype that surrounded it when the book was released a little over ten years ago. I'm planning to continue the series, hopefully farther than the second book this time, so I'll see how it pans out.
